London – a brief guide
London is the capital of the United Kingdom. It is a big, noisy city with lots of colour. You can see there people from all over the world – from Asia, Africa, South America. Thanks to these people London is a very cosmopolitan place. London is also a very important international financial centre.
There are many famous streets and places in London. Lots of people visit Buckingham Palace – the place where presidents, kings and politicians go and meet the Queen. Buckingham Palace is like a small town with a police station, two post offices, a hospital, a bar, two sports clubs, a disco, a cinema and a swimming pool. There are 600 rooms and three miles of red carpet. Two men work full-time to look after the 300 clocks. About 700 people work in the Palace.
The British Prime Minister lives at 10 Downing Street, which is very close to Big Ben – the most famous clock in the world. Other famous tourist destinations are the Tower of London and St Paul’s Cathedral. There are always queues of people at Madame Tussaud’s Museum in Marylebone Road - the world’s most famous wax work museum.
You can travel almost everywhere in London by ‘tube’, which is what the British call their metro system. During the day you can travel quickly and in comfort, but in the morning, when people are going to work, the underground is very full and uncomfortable. People call this time of day the rush hour.
