Lesson Plan 7

Subject: ‘Try’ by Pink.
Aims:
- to teach new vocabulary
- to teach informal language and American dialect
- to practise reading, speaking, writing and listening skills
- to teach word-formation
- to practise using dictionaries
Exponents:
- lexical items: die, cry, try, ask, mean, fall in love, burn, heart, flame, desire
Assumed knowledge:
Ss already know some of the words used in the text of the song.
Anticipated problems:
Aims: English Polish dictionaries, copies for Ss prepared by the T App. 7a, App. 7b, a CD with the song, a CD player, short tests App. 7c, App. 7d
Level: pre-intermediate
Age: 13
Time: 45 min.
Procedure:
1. Warm-up (2 min) T writes on the Bb a sentence consists of shortages and asks Ss to decode it e.g. CU l8er @ home. Bye 4 now. xx (See you later at home. Bye for now. Kisses. The one who guesses gets plus ‘+’.

2. Pre-listening exercise (3 min) T reads aloud part of the song and asks Ss to guess the title and the singer. If necessary T reads till Ss hear the words try, try, try.
3. Ex. 1 (4 min) Before listening T tells Ss to listen to the song and count how many times the word try appears in the song. After listening T checks if Ss counted 36 words.
4. Ex. 2 (6min) T asks Ss to complete the lyrics of the song using the words given App. 7a. Then T checks Ss answers. All the new words should be written in Ss’ notebooks and T helps with translation using miming, drawing pictures or context.
5. Ex. 3 (3 min) T asks Ss to divide new words into two groups: verbs and love and writes them on the Bb. Then explains Ss that they are going to make a word map. Words fall in love and burn can be put in both categories. Ss come to the Bb and write the words.
6. Ex. 3 (10 min) T explains that Ss are going to use dictionaries to the next exercise. Ss task will be to complete the table with new words created from the given ones. Next T informs that similar tasks can appear on the final English exam in their Lower Secondary School and language school competitions. To make the exercise easier T tells each pair of Ss to choose two words. At the end Ss reads their answers and rest of the class complete the missing information in the table.
7. Ex. 4 (6 min) T tells Ss to make two sentences with the words from the song. Each pair should choose two words.
8. Ex.5 (3 min) T tells Ss to pay attention on words in bolds and asks if Ss recognize them: wanna, gonna, ‘bout, gotta. Then T explains the tendency of using slang in songs and sometimes in daily life as well.
9. Ex. 4 (3 min) Ss listen to the song again.
10. Short test (5 min) T asks Ss to write a short test App. 7c connected with translating vocabulary from this
lesson.
