THE LEGEND OF
THE LADY OF ZAMMITELLU CASTLE
- a legend from Malta

A castle is formed on the Right side of the acting area (by six of the students: Szymon, Kamil, Damian, Zosia, Patrycja and Dominika).

From the other side of the acting area, two girls enter: Asia and Barbara. They look at the castle.

From between the people forming the castle a light shines on to the girls.
USE A TORCH!

The girls are afraid:
“Look! There is a light in the window of the castle!”

Veronica: (comes out from behind the castle)
Stop! Do not be afraid! The light that shines from the window, keeps away all kind of woe! Let me tell you a story.

The girls stop to listen.

The castle dissolves.

Zosia joins Kamila, Sandra and Paulina on the Down Right Side of acting area, and while they play the instruments, she sings:

Song:

In the castle lived a lady
She was kind as kind could be,
With her father, a rich merchant,
Who was very miserly.

She was kind to the poor people,
Gave them food, and gave it free.
But her father did not like it,
With her ways did not agree.

During the song:
Szymon stands where the castle had been, with Damian and Kamil standing behind him. Dominika walks with Patrycja, who carries a basket with fruit and bread, towards the two girls (Asia and Barbara) and gave them food. Asia and Barbara take the food kneeling and kissing her hand.
They freeze as a statue (imp. Dominika and Patrycja stop facing the audience, while Asia and Barbara remain kneeling).

Veronica:
Her greatest wish was to become a nurse for the Red Cross. But her father had other plans.

HERE SZYMON HAS THE DIALOGUE IN POLISH WITH DAMIAN

S: Witaj don Damiano w mym domu.
D: Witaj. I’ve come to ask for your daughter’s hand.
S: To może kosztować. (drapie się po brodzie)
D: I have a lot of money. Wyciąga sakiewkę z pieniędzmi.
S: Good deal don Damiano, good deal.

It must be clear that they are arguing that Damian marries Dominka. Damian gives Szymon money. They shake hands.

Damian and Kamil leave (the right of the acting area, Asia and Barbara go out left).
Szymon is very happy.

He calls Dominika.

He signals to Patrycja to leave them. Patrycja goes a few steps to the left.

HERE THE DIALOGUE BETWEEN SZYMON AND DOMINIKA
S: Córeczko,
D: Tak tato?
S: Czy pamiętasz don Damiano z Sycylii?
D: Tak pamiętam go
S: Przyjeżdża do nas na swój ślub
D: Tak? A z kim się żeni?
S: Z tobą córeczko.
D: Nie, nie, nie!
S: (he paid me a lot of money) you must marry him!

At the end, Dominika is kneeling and crying. Szymon is about to hit her, but sees Patrycja looking at him at, and goes Right.
Patrycja goes to comfort Dominika.

Zosia sings while Kamila, Sandra and Paulina play the instruments.

Song:

The poor girl was so unhappy,
She was crying all the time.
But her father had decided,
Did not think it was a crime.

And although his daughter begged him
To release her from this vow,
He stood firm on his decision
She must marry anyhow.

During the song, Dominika stays crying with Patrycja.

Szymon comes back to look at her from a distance.

At the end of the song, Dominika goes out accompanied by Patrycja.

Veronika:
Time waits for no one. And at last the unhappy day when the poor girl was to marry, arrived.
Don Damiano came from Sicily and the people came out to see him.

Damian enters from left, accompanied by Kamil.

All the girls come out to look at him and admire him.

Dominika, accompanied by Patrycja, enters from right led by Szymon.

Szymon meets Damian and embraces him.

HERE A SHORT SPEECH IN POLISH BY SZYMON:
Witam wszystkich! Cóż za szczęśliwy dzień dziś mamy!

What a happy day for all of us! Don Damiano from Sicily is marrying my daughter – Dominika! Let the celebration start!

On greeting Damian, Szymon speeks of what a happy day is for everyone, but especially for him, to see his daughter marry such a fine gentelman.

Then he reckon to Dominika to come and meet Damian.
Damian kisses her hand.

Szymon:
And now let the celebration start.
Here follows the dance. (Polonez)

During the dance, Dominika goes out unnoticed.

At the end of the dance, Damian asks for Dominika.

Damian:
Where is my bride?

Szymon signals to Patrycja to go and get her.

Patrycja goes to get her Right, and all wait for her.

During this wait Szymon speaks with Damian and Kamil.
Patrycja comes back frightened. She goes to Kamila, Zosia and Sandra.
They are all worried and afraid.

HERE PATRYCJA TALKS WITH GIRLS ABOUT DOMINIKA’S DISAPPEARING.

Szymon sees the girls talking.
Szymon:
Well, where is your lady?
Patrycja:
I don’t know. We cannot find her. She is gone.
Szymon:
Gone? What do you mean gone?
Patrycja:
Gone.
And she starts crying, and goes to the other girls.

HERE THE DIALOGUE IN POLISH BETWEEN DAMIAN AND KAMIL.

D: Co się stało? Gdzie ona jest? Kiedy wróci?
K: To hańba! Zdrada! Zostaliśmy oszukani!
Damian and Kamil feel insulted. They show that they believed to have been betrayed. At the end they go out Left.

Everyone goes out except Szymon. He is really worried, angry, afraid, sorry (what a mixture), and ends by dying.

Weronika:
And no one ever discovered what had happened to the Lady who had disappeared on her wedding day.

Zosia sings with Kamila and Sandra playing.

Song:

And with time she was forgotten
People thought of her no more.
No one spoke of this poor lady,
And life went on as before.

But a plague hit the poor people,
Killing people by the score.
They prayed heaven for assistance
Keep the plague from our door.

All the cast are kneeling and praying. Some look very ill; all are frightened.
(Music)
Then Dominika enters dressed in brilliant white and stands where the castle had been.
The people look at her surprise and fear.

Dominika:
I have helped my people in my life. And now I have come to protect you again. I shall place a light at my window, and it shall keep away all woe.

The castle is built again, accompanied by the flute and the guitar.

Weronika:
So you must not be afraid of the light you see there. For the light that shines from that window, is the light the lady put to keep away all kind of woe.
FREEZE
Then the castle again dissolves and all the cast form a line for the Curtain Call.
