"Lights" by Ellie Goulding-lesson plan

Lesson Plan

Subject: ‘Lights’ by Ellie Goulding
Aims:
- to teach new vocabulary
- to practise reading, speaking and listening skills
Exponents:
- lexical items: shine, stone, unlocked, alone, skin, breath, dream, on my own, beat, push
Assumed knowledge:
Ss already know some of the words used in the text of the song.
Anticipated problems:
Aims: copies for Ss prepared by the T App. 3a, App. 3b, a CD with the song, a CD player, short tests App. 3c, App. 3d.
Level: pre-intermediate
Age: 13
Time: 45 min.

Procedure:
1. Warm-up (2 min) T asks Ss about the weather and chooses volunteers.
2. Pre-listening exercise (3 min) T asks Ss what helps them read at night. Ss give their answers and finally say light. Then T explains that lights is the title of the song they going to learn that day.
3. Listening (5 min) Ss listen to the song and complete the text with the words from the box App. 3a. After listening T asks Ss for their answers.
4. Ex. 1 (5 min) Ss try to guess the part of speech and meaning of the words. T helps Ss to understand the meaning using body language. Then Ss write the new vocabulary to their notebooks.
5. Song (5 min) T asks Ss to listen to the song once again and sing.
6. Ex. 3 (20 min) T divides Ss in two teams and tells them that they are going to try to guess the words from the song. Each person will choose one word from T’s bag App. 3b and will have to show it without any words. Both teams can guess. The team which guess the word, gets one point. If the person doesn’t understand the word, she/he may ask T for translation but then he/she can’t get additional point for her/his team. The winner gets plus (+)
7. Short test (5 min) T asks Ss to write a short test connected with translating vocabulary from this lesson.
